Embedded firmware and hardware development

Firmware for microcontrollers, host tools for devices nobody documented, and our own PCB design tooling. C++ and Rust on ESP32, nRF52 and STM32.

STRATUM 01HOW WE WORK

Our embedded work started with radio_tool, a C++ tool that flashes firmware onto DMR radios over USB through bootloaders with no public documentation. sub-ghz-modem is firmware for ESP32, nRF52840 and STM32WL boards that turns their LoRa and FSK radios into a serial modem with a framed binary protocol.

On the power side, battery-control is one async Rust interface over many batteries, BMSes and power stations (Anker SOLIX, JK, Daly, Victron and Pylontech over CAN), and cycler runs cell-level capacity tests by driving a bench supply and an electronic load.

For boards we use agentee, our own PCB design tool: schematics and layouts as text, design checks against fab rules, and GPU simulation of RF traces. camwall and our ADS-B receivers are examples of the Raspberry Pi appliances we build and leave running.

STRATUM 02WHAT WE BUILD

Firmware

C++ and Rust on ESP32, nRF52840 and STM32WL, with radio drivers for SX126x and SX127x.

Device protocols

USB, serial, CAN and RS485, including protocols that have to be worked out from the device.

Host software

Cross-platform tools on libusb for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Power and batteries

BMS integration, power station control, cycle testing and bench instrument automation.

PCB design

Schematics and layouts in agentee, impedance controlled RF traces, fab output for JLCPCB or PCBWay.

Appliances

Raspberry Pi devices that boot into one job and keep doing it.

STRATUM 04QUESTIONS
Do you design PCBs?
Yes. We design boards in agentee, our own tool, including controlled impedance RF layouts, and deliver fab output for JLCPCB or PCBWay.
Which microcontrollers do you work with?
Most of our recent work is on ESP32, nRF52840 and STM32WL, in C++ and Rust.
Can you write software for a device with no documentation?
Yes. The DMR radio bootloaders radio_tool talks to have no public documentation.

Tell us what you need built.

You will hear back from the engineer who would do the work, not a sales team. We take on a few engagements at a time so each gets real attention.
