RUST · BACKEND SYSTEMS

Rust backend development

We write production backends, services and tools in Rust, and we run several of them ourselves: APIs, background workers, storage servers, search engines and desktop apps. Based in Dublin, working with clients anywhere.

STRATUM 01HOW WE WORK

Most of what Apex Strata ships is Rust. The LNVPS hosting platform, the zap.stream streaming server, the Route96 media server, a full-text search engine over the Nostr network and WaveShark, a real-time radio decoder, are all Rust codebases we wrote and still maintain. We pick it because services written in it stay up, use little memory, and keep their performance as they grow.

Day to day that means async Rust on tokio with axum and sqlx, Redis for shared state, and Docker or plain systemd for deployment. We are just as comfortable further down: FFI to C libraries such as FFmpeg, eBPF programs, GPU compute through wgpu, and WebAssembly for code that also has to run in a browser.

You can bring us a new service, a slow or unreliable component that needs rewriting, or a Rust codebase that needs more experienced hands. Everything we write is yours.

STRATUM 02WHAT WE BUILD

APIs and services

HTTP and WebSocket APIs with auth, rate limits, OpenAPI docs and background job workers.

Data and storage

MySQL, SQLite and Redis through sqlx, content-addressed blob storage, and Tantivy search indexes.

Real-time systems

Streaming media servers, Nostr relays, and DSP pipelines that keep up with a radio in real time.

Rewrites

Moving a hot path or a whole service from Node, Python or Go to Rust, one piece at a time, behind the same interface.

Systems work

FFI, eBPF and XDP, GPU compute with wgpu, cross-compiling for ARM, and .deb, .rpm, .msi and .dmg packaging.

Desktop and WebAssembly

Native desktop apps in egui, and Rust compiled to WebAssembly to run in the browser.

STRATUM 04QUESTIONS
Do you take on existing Rust codebases?
Yes. We can review an existing codebase, fix performance or reliability problems, or join as extra engineers on a roadmap you already have.
Can we read code you have written before we talk?
Yes. Most of our work is open source on GitHub, so the code behind every project on this site is public.
Where are you based?
Dublin, Ireland. Apex Strata Limited is registered in Ireland (company no. 702423) and works remotely with clients in Ireland, the UK, the EU and the US.
Who owns the code?
You do. There are no licence fees and no lock-in.

Tell us what you need built.

You will hear back from the engineer who would do the work, not a sales team. We take on a few engagements at a time so each gets real attention.
